Natural Ways to Keep Your Home Pest Free
Pest control is an essential part of your home maintenance plan. Yet, no one wants to fill their house with dreadful chemicals unless it is really necessary.
Fortunately, some of the most effective methods to control pests are all-natural, and you can try these strategies at home to keep pests away between your regular professional services.
Clean Up the Crumbs
We always say that a broom and dustpan may be one of your best defenses against a pest invasion.
All pests are attracted to potential food and water sources that are found within the average home, and it is possible that you are serving up dinner to rodents and insects every night without even knowing it.
Start by checking the back shelves in your home’s pantry, the kitchen floors beneath appliances and other hidden spaces for food crumbs that pests use to survive.
Cleaning these areas up helps to starve those critters out. If they can’t find food, they’ll be forced to move on to somewhere else.
Close Up Entry Points
Rodents and insects must be able to find a way inside of your home before they can wage a full scale invasion. Look around your house for places where pests may be getting inside.
A few obvious places are holes in window screens or large gaps underneath doors. However, you may need to do a little more detective work to find places that are less obvious such as a loose vent on the rooftop or a tiny crack around a pipe leading into the house.
If you find a place, repair it right away. However, you may need to have the area professionally inspected first to make sure that you do not seal rodents into the walls by closing up a hole.
Grow a Windowsill Garden
Many common herbs are known for repelling insects. For instance, flies are deterred by basil, and garlic is a natural pest repellant.
Try placing a few potted plants strategically along your kitchen windowsill or near the doors to limit the amount of insects that invade these areas of your home.
Establish a Clear Perimeter
Minimizing the pests that exist in your outdoor areas around the house helps to keep them out of your home. Seasonal perimeter treatments help to eliminate bugs that tend to inhabit areas along the exterior walls of your home.
However, you can make these work even better by doing things such as keeping the branches trimmed back away from the roof and walls.
Try a Peppermint Spray
Spiders and other insects are repelled by the scent of peppermint. Try diluting peppermint oil with water in a spray bottle, and apply it in areas where spiders tend to build their webs such as in the top corners of rooms near the ceiling.
You can also soak a cotton ball in the solution and leave it on the windowsill to prevent spiders from entering your home.
Whether you have allergies, small children or pets, we understand that limiting chemicals around the house is beneficial for everyone. That’s why we always use natural pest control methods whenever it is possible.
