Mosquitoes are one of summer's most prevalent annoyances, causing itchy red bumps and making summer nights unpleasant. However, mosquitoes are more than just annoyances.
They can also transmit diseases such as Zika and West Nile. The following are some tips on keeping mosquitoes away during the summer.
Remove Stagnant Water
Standing water is a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes. And there might be more of it around your yard than you think.
Anything from toys, flower pots, open garbage cans, kiddie pools, bird baths, and even something the size of a bottle cap can attract mosquitoes for breeding.
The only exception to this rule is chlorinated swimming pools. The chlorine and a working filter will keep mosquitoes away.
Have a Pest Company Check Hidden Places
There might be places you haven't thought of when it comes to standing water around your house. A pest control company can investigate places like gutters or areas near the foundation that might be collecting water. They can also assess any possible entry points around your house if you're finding mosquitoes inside.
Use Repellent
Lotions, or sprays that contain DEET are commonly used to repel mosquitoes, but you can also use natural remedies as well. Strong-smelling natural oils like lemon and eucalyptus do a good job of keeping mosquitoes at bay. However, both DEET and natural oils will wear off after a time, so it's important to follow instructions about when to reapply.
Cover Your Feet
Mosquitoes are attracted to sweat and feet tend to get quite sweaty in the summer months. In fact, the type of mosquito blamed for the Zika virus prefers to bite on the lower body. Use repellent liberally on feet, or make sure they're fully covered when in any area likely to have mosquitoes.
Dress Light
Mosquitoes are attracted to darker colors. So, wearing white and other light colors can be a deterrent. However, bare arms and legs will attract these bugs, so it's also good to consider wearing long sleeves and pants when near mosquito areas.
Eat Inside
Most mosquitoes prefer to bite after dark or near dark. But the Zika-carrying mosquitoes appear to feed during the day. If you live in the South, especially, you should consider eating indoors as much as possible.
Spray Before Entertaining
If you're planning to host a big outdoor party, you can take precautions by spraying the area with a pretreat mosquito repellent product. Spray the area at least 24 hours before your party.
Consider a Tent
Another option when entertaining, or simply enjoying warm summer nights, is to install a canopy or tent with mosquito nets, on your patio or deck. You can even find nets that attach to your patio table umbrella.
Change the Lighting
You have a few options when purchasing mosquito deterring lighting. You can buy electronic repellent lights, or bug zappers. Citronella candles are often marketed as mosquito repellents, but wax candles with geraniol are more effective. Another option is to burn incense in scents that mosquitoes dislike, including eucalyptus, lemon balm and lavender.
